Our Rubric

With every review we write as of our 2015 re-boot, we will discuss films in the contexts of writing, style, acting, direction, as well as providing our final thoughts and star ratings. We define below what we mean by these categories.

Writing

With this portion, we will address the strength of the film’s story, themes, structure, character development, and dialogue. In short, we will discuss how and if the writing supported the film’s goals, and what we discerned those goals to be.

Style

With this portion, we will address the film’s aesthetic qualities, such as cinematography, composition, production design, costumes, score/soundtrack, editing, and sound design. In short, we will discuss how and if the style of the film supported the film’s goals.

Acting

With this portion, we will address the ways the film’s principle cast portrayed their respective characters. In short, we will discuss how well the performances supported the film’s goals.

Directing

With this portion, we will address the film’s main artistic voice – its director. In short, we will discuss how we feel the director influenced the film, if this influence was successful, and where the film fits in the filmmaker’s overall body of work.

Final Thoughts

With this portion, we will provide our overall impressions of the film.  In short, we will offer a summary of our sentiments and give the film a star rating out of five stars.
